Hello, my name is Deirdre O'Connor-Yahia. I am a qualified General Nurse. I worked for twenty five years at the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen Square, London WC1N 3BG from 1987 to 2014.. I gained invaluable experience and knowledge during my working life there. The patients presented with a wide range of neurological conditions such as Dementia, Motor Neuron Disease, Parkinsons Disease and many more. I worked on an acute neuro-medical ward where patients came for diagnosis, repeat treatments, and to treat acute relapses in their conditions. I enjoyed being involved in the caring and treating of the patients. It was crucial to have skills in recording, reporting and ongoing assessment of the patient's condition. It was rewarding to build up positive rapports with returning patients and be there to provide emotional support.
I took four years out of my working life to home school two of my three children. I enjoyed this time, bonding and educating and having fun days out with my children. During this time I studied Psychotherapy, Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I enjoyed gaining insights into the emotional aspects of health and wellbeing.
From 2014 until the present I have gradually started working from part-time to full-time as a Carer in the community. I have been developing and gaining invaluable experience in caring for clients in their own homes. I have enjoyed having one to one time with clients, getting to know them, how they like their care to be given. I am professional and caring towards my client, mindful of maintaining dignity and supporting them through their illness. I am happy to liaise with the Health team in the community, doctors, nurses, pharmacy and physiotherapists as required.
My specific skills are as follows - Lifting and Handling of clients using equipment such as hoists caring for clients with Urinary catheters, caring for clients with PEG feeding, feeding patients with various diets.
